That's precisely it from my perspective.

I didn't love commuting in the Boxster. The visibility is not great with the top up. So most of the time I'd end up driving the Mazda, and the Boxster would sit.

But those one or two trips a year when Marisa and I took the Boxster up to Pennsylvania, it was magical on twisty two-lane. Nothing better. And I kept it four years longer than I otherwise would have just for that use case. It was the complete package. Excellent engine, excellent gearbox, great road feel and handling, comfortable seats. The engine soundtrack alone made the ownership experience.

We're going up there in three weeks and it's going to be a major bummer to not have the Boxster on the trip.

That’s one of the best things about the 2. It’s at least 75% as much fun to drive with the top up as it is down. It really behaves like a sedan or coupe with the top up, with just as much visibility.

And yes, it’s probably at least 25% less fun to drive than the Boxster with the top down…

Ultimate compromisemobile!

And, really sorry about your trip, JV. It’s a little heartbreaking to do a fantastic, twisty road trip in an appliance car.

Just a thought:

You could even try a manual 991.2:

I did briefly consider Turo until I saw what the rental costs were. Not remotely worth that much money.

a lot cheaper then buying a car

MT selection is pretty slim in san diego, F80 M3 comp or GT350 was about it.

We had an awesome experience using it in Florida. We rented a 981s before we got our 911. It was a great chance to see what we liked and didn't.

The cost wasn't too bad, but we were comparing to a minimum rental of an econbox. If we didn't need to rent a car at all, it might have been a different decison.

Edit: Found JST's perfect rental... surprisingly in NJ no less

I think some dealers also rent them, but there may be some membership associated with it--and they are probably all PDK/4 cylinder models.

Hmm. Not in the DC area yet:

Yeah, still no Boston. Regardless, I'm sure the selection drops to nothing the moment one filters by manual transmission.
