They are trained to do that. If they focus on monthly payment and then tweak that number by adjusting down payment and term, they can get a lot of folks to not realize they are paying too much $$ for the car.

This is what I mean. And I don't blame them for using that approach if it works for them. But at some point it has to hit you that this is not that type of customer and you are just annoying the person instead.

Yeah, no.

It's so funny how there have been all these stories everywhere about how the covid changed car sales and dealers now get how important digital is when there are so many that are still firmly stuck in 1985.

Cheers, brother, you'll get there.

It’s funny. I had a terrible sales person (young guy) at the local BMW dealership and a very easy one at the Mazda dealer (middle-aged guy.) Mazda guy loved my 2 series and just got me what I needed with the CX-5 with no muss/no fuss. A delight to work with.

BMW sales guy really did lose that sale. I was weak enough to pull the trigger a number of times, but he never got me a timely response. Which always caused me to come back to my senses.

Yeah - he’s probably inexperienced and hasn’t developed his own intuition for when to “follow the book” and do the four square vs adapting to individual customers needs. I’m sure the management plays a role too.

I juts clicked on a saved search for used GTI's and coincidentally, at the top, this car was advertised.

https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...lickType=alpha

It's exactly what we want, brand new, for $3k off MSRP. Seems fair to expect that discount from our local dealer, right?
