Pirelli P-Zero Nero M/S final tally
I like to keep a log of the tires I've used on my current BMW, and so far, the Pirellis I just replaced today have put up some pretty impressive numbers:
Length of time used: July 2005 through October 2010, or 5 years and 3 months. These tires NEVER came off the vehicle even in the winter months, but were rotated every 5,000 miles or so. Total miles accumulated: 50,955 Total times they were patched/repaired: 2 I thought about leaving them on a little bit longer, but when I measured the tread depth, I figured 1/32" inch is pushing it just a bit. I sure wouldn't want to drive this coming winter with them, if I wanted to live to see the next year. So I took advantage of Discount Tire's $100 rebate and got a set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus in 225/45ZR-17s.

The thing is, the tires got a tad more responsive and grippier (in the dry, at least) as it wore down. In the wet, they spun a bit more (gee, I wonder why). At least I got my money's worth without killing myself or other people.

Since the BMW doesn't see as much use any more (I'm not commuting to Illinois, and use the Atom for fun) its previous set of tires (RE750's) were replaced (with RE760's) on age (5 years), not mileage or tread depth. I'm less picky about the snow tires on the BMW (LM22's), though I should probably replace them as they're probably 7 years old now. But they get less use and are under less stress than the summer performance tires. The Atom goes through tires at a fair clip - 6K miles for rears, 10K for fronts, assuming I don't get too aggressive on the track. But then, those are R-comps (A048 medium on the front, medium-hard on the back). |
