Attempted Carjacking

Be careful out there. Tonight on the way home from work someone tried to steal the M3 in downtown DC. It was a classic setup; one dude bumped into me from behind in a Jeep and when I got out to look at the damage, the other dude jumped into my car and tried to drive off.

"Tried to," because (and I am not making this up) he couldn't drive a stick.

I went back around to the door and he was sitting in the driver's seat, all freaked out, trying to get the car to go. But mostly he just revved the engine and looked confused. I was yelling at him by this point, some variations of "are you trying to steal my fucking car?" and "you can't drive a fucking stick, can you? get out of my car!" and eventually he did--he crawled across the console and bolted out of the passenger side.

He didn't set the brake, though, and the car started rolling back...but the Jeep was still there, and the car smacked into the Jeep and stopped. That allowed me to get back in and drive off.

Jesus Christ, man. People.

Lord. That is an old Florida trick. But, it definitely makes you think twice about having nice things. I’m so sorry this happened to you.

I am super careful about even stopping for gas these days.

But, we could all get caught up in that one.

So glad you weren’t hurt. But surely your peace of mind took a blow.

DAMN! EFFING CRAZY! Glad you are okay.

Not that it matters as it can be repaired, but did the M3 come out of it unscathed?

Bumper is scraped up but not too bad. Nothing structural.

And yeah I’m feeling both put out and extremely fortunate.

Awful, sorry to hear... But also glad that was the worst of it. Hearing a few stories around NYC as well...

Damn - That was as good an outcome that could come out of a situation like that.

On the 'getting out of the car' thing like you had to do -
My Dad taught me that whenever I have to get out of a car to investigate an accident or such - ALWAYS lock the car and take the key with you. Period. When I was driving the gas delivery truck - unless I was at the station dropping or at the office filling up - I was emphatically told to never leave the car/truck running and unlocked. Period. (I think he had something like what happened to you happen to him back in the late 50's or something). Luckily, I have not had to exercise that lesson - but it is in the back of my mind all the time.
