Oh cool, sounds like a great trip! And that class is a huge amount of fun.

FWIW, it’s actually not affiliated with Skip Barber; Barber Motorsports Park is a different Barber. But my sense is that getting taught by Porsche works drivers is even better…

2025 BMW Z4 M40i Debuts With Manual Gearbox For $69,950

Not to sidetrack but I love that pic of your old Audi cabriolet. For some reason, Ive gotten into 80s and 90s Audis recently. I’ve flirted repeatedly with getting an Audi but never pull the trigger

Sounds like you should keep the 1 series c since you love it and it checks so many boxes. On the other end, I don’t see you being happier with a z4 manual than your current 911 and likely the 911 costs less to own due to lower depreciation

@Dan per my own 53 years on this earth a lot can also happen during that amount of time as life tends to eff things up more often than not. Clearly that’s my personal take.

Edit: I will elaborate, my own health issues are what pushed me to take a 992 T allocation as opposed to what I really wanted, a 992.1 C2S Coupe allocation. Moral of the story… things generally do not work out as planned.

Sorry, should have stipulated convertible. Top down experience + manual transmission is a requirement for me.

Thanks, I assumed the Barber course had to do with Skip the link was good to read.

We're finalizing the plans and may need to arrange it with a return through Myrtle Beach because our niece is getting married down there one of the Oct weekends.

My wife and I will both be doing the 2 day Performance Course either Oct 1/2 or 7/8:

Quote:
Our most popular course, the Performance two-day program at the Barber Motorsports Park begins with a brief classroom session discussing vehicle dynamics and the driving line.

Master the proper driving line and the many technical corners of the track, while continuing to sharpen basic skills at the Autocross, Skid Pad and Lane Change exercises.

Day two is dedicated to Track Sessions (including laps in the Taycan GTS), the Trail Braking exercise, competing in the Autocross Challenge, and more skid pad time. The program wraps up with thrilling Hot Lap rides with the instructors.

The Hot Lap sounds like it could be lame but in fact it was among my favorite parts of the course; by that time I’d just gotten good enough to not be scared of the track and the hot lap was an extremely visceral reminder of how big the gulf is between that and where the pro drivers are, skill-wise.

Make sure to check out the museum on the grounds while you’re there. It has some neat cars and a lot of very cool bikes.

My wife and I are in Florida for a work trip with a vacation weekend tagged on so we rented a z4 through turo for the weekend to see how livable it is. So far it's pretty good. This one is the 4cyl and obviously automatic, but power is fine. Steering feel has surprisingly good feedback. It's the first electric BMW rack that I would classify as good and it fits the personality of the car well. The chassis is rigid and feels neutral at mildly aggressive corners. It's very familiar BMW in controls and functions, which is a good thing. It still has ID7 or 8 with climate control buttons, etc. From a livability perspective (it has to be a daily driver for me), the trunk is awesome. Easily fits 2 suitcases and 2 laptop bags with the top down. The seat is so-so. I am not sure if it is a specific issue to the seat design or just the fact that I really miss adjustable headrests, but my neck/upper back don't love the angle of the top portion.

Overall, I like it. This did really reaffirm that I do NOT want a fun car with an automatic. It just sucks all the life out of an otherwise good car.

Nice! Trunk is impressive. Does the higher spec Z4 have better seats?

As soon as any of us can drive the new manual Z4, I’d love to know how it goes.

There have been comments that Toyota managed to remove most of the notchiness of the BMW manual in the Supra —is this the transmission they’re using for the new Z4?
