(they call it "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance"). It's only for new vehicles.
The terms are
  • It's 7 years 100K miles (so 3 extra years and 50K extra miles above factory warranty.
  • It costs $2.66 per month (so $12/year)
  • It has a $250 deductible, but (supposedly) covers anything that goes wrong on the car other than maintenance and wear items.

I took the deal. Hopefully I won't need it, but if I do they will actually pay up.

Um, yeah. That seems like a no-brainer.

From what I can tell, all the massive options $5k for Enhanced Autopilot and the $5k for the Pilot 4S/brakes etc upgrade (which may become free) are actually material to your enjoyment of the car.

except for this time. You're within a factor of 2.66

And more seriously, I assume you start paying that $2.66 / month now and the warranty isn't transferrable to a new owner? If you get rid of the car, does the charge stop, or are you on the hook for $2.66/month for the 7 years? Regardless for $230 it is a total no-brainer. Sweet find. I'm just trying to figure how the Insurance company is making money on this. My assumption is most of their clients don't keep the car long enough to get use out of it.

Details on coverage would also be interesting. We've had a few threads in the past on extended service contracts (which we all usually call "warranties", but they're really not).

Even so, echo all the comments along the lines of "for that little money, why not?"
