Uhhhh Matt, only use that sausage grip for....
....sausages. Not oil filters.
Getting ready to do the screwdriver through filter removal method. Alex

Get an oil filter wrench that grips the filter. You will never have to use the "drive a screw driver" method again.
Like one of these: http://www.usahardware.com/inet/shop...div/70_746.htm I used to be an expert with the screw driver . . . |

I had a strap wrench, just couldn't get it to budge. I finally did, without resorting to a screw driver.

Yup, that's the same, basic wrench that I have too. Still, it's usually a challenge finding enough space to move the wrench, because so often the filter is placed in a difficult position. The Nissan we have is great. Remove the front skid plate, and it's right in front, directly above the front driveshaft. Super easy. Even has a c-channel bracket-thingy to funnel the dripping oil down and away from the engine block, and directly into your oil drain pan. I thought that was a nice, clever touch. |

It's amazing how little torque an oil filter with an organic gasket requires to make a good seal.
The spin-on filter for my motorcycle uses an o-ring seat: 2 full turns past fully seated. Now THAT sucks. |
