Finally got around to doing the homemade UGDO

I had my garage door opener hard mounted in my E36, using a momentary push button switch I bought from Radio Shack. It was located in a blank panel to the left of the steering wheel.

For the past ten months or so, the guts of the GDO, still connected to a loop of wire and the Radio Shack switch, have been residing in the E46's glove compartment, meaning that I had to open the glove box every time I wanted to use it.

After playing around with the idea of mounting an OEM switch in the empty spot near the DSC/sport mode switches, or a smaller switch next to the XM display in the ashtray, I decided to take the easy way out and mount the RS switch in the panel wear the OEM UGDO goes, next to the sunroof switch, in the plastic bit that serves as a microphone cover. With a Dremel and some foam, this was a 15 minute job. I'm pleased with the results.

Next up is despoiling the car. And maybe debadging, too. I'm still undecided about that.

So you're going to despoil it, eh? I actually think the car looks good with it on the trunk, but I definitely understand the appeal of removing trim. I thought my '99 looked much better without the trunk badge, but I don't think I'll be doing that with the '88.

Pretty nice, I kinda want to get the UGDO also.

From what I hear, you can configure it to turn on lights and stuff also.

Is that true?

It's true with the real UGDO. Mine is just my old garage door opener soldered to a Radio Shack switch. It has two functions: open door. close door.

One of these days I am going to have to visit Radio Shack to pick up a switch....

I will be debadging my M when it gets here, I tried to order it without the badging but NA wouldn't accept the option code. The trunk spoiler doesn't bother me, it is subtle enough that I don't find it overly garish.
