Both transmissions have a hill-holder feature this year to keep you from rolling back when starting on inclines. That could be handy. Or you could just learn how to drive.

I never figured out what the big deal was with steep hills and sticks.

Even when I was driving out 10-speed double-clutch 34,000 GWR Kenworth delivery truck I had no problem on Seattle's steepest streets.

The hill holder feature is handy, even though I do know how to drive up hills without it. But while it's nice to have, I would prefer a direct connection to the brakes. This electric system just seems too much like an on/off switch.

But our driver's ed typically doesn't teach you how to use the parking brake. The V even had the parking brake on the floor.

Hill hold with smg? You aren't driving the car with smg. Why do you need a hill hold feature? That's dumb.

now that I think about it, the system must have been different. Iiuc, the hill hold feature on the e9x family uses the electric brake system. Your M3 didn't have electric brakes. Maybe I just don't understand how it works.

That is dumb. The hill hold feature that the e9x uses has the brakes hold the car in place until you start moving or for two seconds or so, whichever comes first. It's kind of neat and makes life a little easier, although not something I think is necessary. I certainly wouldn't want to do it with the clutch though. I don't know what system the new p car uses, but I don't think comparing a clutch based system to a brake based system makes any sense.
