If memory serves, the single tailpipe means it's a 180 hp OG TT, rather than the slightly hotter 225 hp version. The Beetle had that same engine in the same state of tune, I believe.
It's built on the Golf platform, like the Beetle, too. |

Fortunately, it's been a long time.

Not that long for me. A couple weeks, maybe?
Very long time since seeing one that appeared to be in as good shape bodywise as that one.

A George Barris creation from the early 60's, a Chevy Asteroid.
Barris, perhaps the most well-known of the custom car builders of the 1960s, built TV cars for the Munsters, The Monkees and the dynamic duo's Batmobile. I shot this on the I Phone on display in Newport, RI - all original and in exceptional condition with appropriate patina. It belonged to a single collector for years until he recently passed away. Cool collection, but I don't really love Barris's TV-ish custom work. In my mind, he'll always be attached to the 50s custom movement, like this one:

Les Dunham is from my home town of Boonton, and he did a lot of work back in the 60's with Barris.
http://dunhamcoach.com/gallery.htm The pictures of The Scorpion and The Agent were taken in my high school parking lot. Wasn't a fan of his pimp-mobiles, but you could always walk past his shop and see what he was working on. Les used to say that The Munster's Grampa coffin hot rod was made from many of his drawings
