MotorTrend Car of the Year. New Camry.

i'm not surprised. the new camry is pretty nice.

but do you know who almost won it? the Cayman.

do you want to know why it lost by the narrowest of margins?

(same reason i refuse to ever consider one is a hint).

on the Cayman:

"Perhaps the sports car of the decade."

"Porsche's stunning Cayman mid-engine coupe tied with Toyota Camry during first-round voting, but lost the runoff. Significance and value rule: Everyman can lust over the Cayman; everyman can own the Camry."

"What tipped the vote against it? Porsche is clearly holding back Cayman power to make room for its costlier 911 icon...."

"Bet you didn't know: Porsche has fitted the Cayman S with taller first and second gears so it won't beat a 911 to 60mph."

What with Camry coming to NASCAR next year the MTCOY award sets up perfectly the classic sales pitch of "Win on Sunday, sell another 1,000 Camry's on Monday."

Which reminds me...the NASCAR Awards dinner starts in about an hour. :

they wrote it; i didn't. i don't doubt it given the lack of a LSD device and how the original nurburgring time was retracted after Rohrl reported it to the press.

look, they were about to award a car costing greater than 60k car of the year. and it almost pulled it off.

but i suppose in the end that they're as cynical about the car's glass ceiling as Clarkson and I am.

we EXPECT cars like the camry, when they're redone, to win these awards. it would have been incredible for Porsche to win this.
