But the reasons you listed are all perfect E91 activities. Maybe not a pristine new E91 like yours, but a used one that someone already mistreated like you intend to do.

I'm actively shopping e46 wagons for my daughter, and you can get a clean one for under $10k. Seems like another perfect fit to your needs.

This is clearly all about wants.

They have no need for a vehicle other than the Turbo and the LR4.

I can understand not wanting to DD the Turbo - not that I agree, but it isn't an entirely unreasonable argument.

Now, as to why she doesn't drive the LR and he didn't keep the wagon for himself.....

Honestly, I don't think the Golf or particularly the Focus will give you that much more interior space than the Mini. If you really want to carry five people, you're going to have to go up in size to something like an Accord.

Which is why you should keep the Mini. But, if you do decide to sell it, post it here first.
In the Golf, with no child seats, you can semi-comfortably fit three not-huge people across the back seat. But I wouldn't try it for a long trip even though legroom is significantly better than in an E90.

I was thinking too that none of these hatches are all that much larger than the MCS. Larger, yes. Meaningfully larger, no.

A TDI hatch is a very nice car, but you can't get a decent one for $15k. Diesel will pay off with high mileage, and this doesn't seem to be the use case. The 5-cyl rabbit will be in budget and have great utility, but man, unlike the TDI, the interior and performance will be a big letdown after the MCS. A non-trashed GTI would do it, cheaper than TDI's as well, but hard to find.

How about a 4-cyl Honda Accord, 6-speed manual? Yes, bland, but quality and probably the nice shifter makes it fun. Just sayin'... Will also have strong resale.

I think your wife deserves something nicer than a beater. Can you find her a lightly used A3 TDI? Do they come in a stick?

And, I believe, FC didn't keep the wagon (which I agree is perfect) because it was a lease with a high buyout.

Yeah, wait...FC can drive the mini and give her the truck. Problem solved.
