Still available. Price drop to $23,990.

Anyway...

What next for me again? Camaro? Probably, but...

It is looking likely that I will be competing in someone else's car next year (which kinda buries the lede about viruses and 2021 autocross expectations, but let's just go with it). If that comes to pass, I don't know if it will be for one year or longer. I think there is strong potential for the arrangement to be a long term commitment/opportunity.

The big question is what it means for my next auto purchase? I think it means I can take autocross competition out of the equation. Does that change the calculus for me? If so, how?

If I don't need it for competition, it opens up a lot of possibilities. I generally prefer manual transmissions to automatics, but it's not even close to a deal breaker for me, so that's not even a factor, which further expands the realm.

The constant, I think, is budget, which probably tops out at $55k. Maybe $60k. However, I would much, much, rather be around $30k.

The cars that bubble up to Camaro level at first pass are
  • a couple different C7 versions
  • I wonder if a nice, clean C6GS or C6Z might be a better financial scratch for the V8 itch I'm trying to scratch with what I kind of suspect will be my last ICE daily driver
  • SHelby GT350
  • BMW M2/M2 Competition
  • Supra
  • Boxster/Cayman of some kind?
  • Tesla 3 Performance

Or maybe I should get a truck. If I do, the idea would be that if competing in the other car doesn't work out, I can buy something at the lower end of the price spectrum later to compete with and tow.

Are there sedans I'm forgetting?

I think the M2 looks like a blast. Since most of us all owned the e36 m3 —what we wanted was more power to go with that handling.

The new m3 on paper is awesome. But in person it is so big. I can’t get over the dimensions compared to even the e46.

@clyde: there is a fluency and lightness and immediate-ness of direction change in the midship Porsche’s. The power looks pathetic on paper but it really works. It is a blast.

With who are you driving next year?

IMO... I would scratch the C6 off the list. Something tells me you would use the car more often if it had the option of putting people in the back. But you'll probably tell me I'm wrong. Also the C6 interior really feels pretty old these days.

The C7 is truly a great car, but it's a lot of money and I expect them to depreciate hard as the C8s start to appear on the used market. Also, two doors / two seats.

You do know Adam George is looking to offload his ZL1, right?

I never really thought much of the M2, especially since BMW seemed incapable of making reliable turbo engines. But then I heard one down in Virginia Beach with what sounded like a mild aftermarket exhaust, and I was a bit smitten. Still, does a turbo I6 scratch your V8 itch?

Knowing you, I feel like the right answer might be the Mustang or the Camaro. I might lean more towards the Mustang if you're confident it'll never need to be a tool for competition. I'd lean towards the Camaro if you think there's a chance you might want to autocross it.

The Supra is ugly and automatic-only. Delete.

Does the 2 series have a more usable back seat than the 1 series? Because the back seat in the 1 series was very close to the functionality of the 993 back seat. Technically usable, but not voluntarily.
