Though, I guess thinking about it, the axle looks pretty far back, so maybe the tongue weight is heavier than it should be?

Yeah I'm also not sure what to think.

And then there's this.

I think that we can all agree that these cases were user induced, but also agree that they probably should have engineered a bit more structural headroom into these trucks.

I was curious, so I pulled up the Chevy 2019 towing guide. Here’s the link: https://www.chevrolet.com/content/da...ring-guide.pdf

For the Colorado, the towing capacity ranges between 3500 and 7700 lb, depending on body style and powertrain options. Most likely it’s either 5000 or 7000 lb capacity assuming it’s a V6 (ZR2 has the lower capacity)

For tongue weight, it has this: “NOTES ON COLORADO Trailer tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of total loaded trailer weight (up to 770 lbs.). Addition of trailer tongue weight must not cause vehicle weights to exceed Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (RGAWR) or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).”

I’m going to guess that driving at relatively high speed on dirt roads with a tongue weight close or over weigh introduced additional g forces that took the effective weight way over spec..

10 to 15 percent tongue weight is the correct Target for pretty much any bumper pull trailer.

These guys are idiots for shock loading the truck with big trailers attached but I agree the frame should not bend. Seems like an engineering problem exposed by dumbass users

That was unfortunately somewhat common with Tacomas and Tundras of that vintage. Bad rust issues led to a settlement and frame replacements for a LOT of trucks.

Does sound like the guy was being a dumbass, but the memes are hilarious. This is going to be come the "whompy wheels" meme of the pickup community.

So I take it that just lifting it caused the frame to crack, letting the rear droop?
