NYC plans all hybrid taxi fleet...

Generally, I vehemently oppose hybrids, but this actually makes sense.

Depending on how they make/get rid of the batteries, I agree with you. I also really dislike hybrids but the clunker v8's make no sense - getting 12mpg sitting in 2mph crosstown traffic.

About 6 months ago I was in a prius cab. I asked him about it and he went on and on about how good it was (he got 30+mpg). It was one of the rare owner operated ones, without that nasty partition.

It's also stop-go-stop-go... perfect for hybrids.

Regenerative braking sorta makes sense for for garbage trucks too.

Oh, he claimed he was the first hybrid cabbie. I love it when you meet the cool, crazy, owner-operated cabbies. Once I had a rabbi (again no partition as it was his own). Last year, one of my friends had the famous Egyptian matchmaker, who immediately set him up on two dates. One of the dates my friend went on was with the WSJ reporter who wrote the article on the matchmaker...

I agree pretty much on all counts. Since the cars are sitting still a lot, it makes a lot of sense to let them shut off in traffic. How long until the city charges the drivers for battery disposal?

IMHO, in the one application where hybrids actually make sense, they should not. The yuppies who buy a hybrid and drive 6,000 miles a year should pay a hybrid surcharge.

Of course they shouldn't. But they will. It's just a matter of time. Like the amount of time the batteries last in 24 hour use and the city has to figure out what to do with them.
