Just an aside, but a good friend of mine was shopping X3's/Q5's/Tiquans and CRV's. The VW got the nod, but she's having trouble getting one in the color/option combo she wants.

Supposedly they'll have it for her before the new year (it's been 4 weeks already).

I did see a new X3 at a stoplight today and thought it quite nice looking - they seemed to have gotten this one just right (in the styling department).

I wouldn't necessarily call it "just right" from a styling perspective, but it's definitely better than the previous gen.

I thought about the tiguan but it's smaller, and the x3 is already getting on the small side. We also considered the touareg after JV's prodding, but it must be quite dear to vw with what they are asking for that thing.

I almost forgot....

I have absolutely no interest in the built in nav, but is there some "hidden" reason that I need it for something else useful?

well, the extra perks with idrive are the extra controls for radio, ipod, bluetooth, etc..... but you get the basic idrive standard on that car, so if you don't want the nav it's not that big of a loss.

I did a drive-by of it, and it looks really small, and has gun-slits for windows.

4 cylinder only and a very high belt-line means tiny windows.

Same engine in the Evoque as in the new Escape, too.

What about the Q5? Everyone seems to love that.

Friends of ours have a Q5 and it has been ... not so reliable.

My only interest in the Touareg was the old one with the V10 TDI. Because that just seemed cool. Not practical, not a logical choice, but cool.

The old Touareg was an electrical nightmare. I wonder if the new ones are any better?
