+1 My 2016 550 had the updated design after they did the recalls and I didn’t have any issues over 3.5yrs, but was always skeptical of long term reliability. I don’t have that same concern with the 6 cyl.

Biggest problem we've seen with the turbo V8 X5 is that it consumes tires. I've recommended that my ex dumps the Pirelli runflats that came on it and replaces them with decent non-runflats. She has the spare option. Last edited by wdc330i; 05-27-2020 at 06:06 PM. |

i haven't had a BMW V8 since the m5, so I don't have any valuable data points on them, but I've been very happy with the 4x n55 engines I've owned (and from everything I've read the B58 is better in just about every way).

The B58 is a great engine. TBD on its longterm reliability, though, too.

Hot V8 configuration is just asking for trouble. Good lord what a stupid idea.

The n52 was fine in an e90 330i, and even that car would be thought of as needing revs today. Sure in other lands with small engines, the n52 x5 will be more than fine. But in our great land with cheap torque, it will feel insufficient. I had an x5 with b58 loaner, it was quite fine; I didn't feel the v8 need.
I mean, how fast do you want to go around in an x5? It's not even fun, just competent. The x3 b58 might be a good choice if the size is sufficient and height a need... Don't know if it handles as tidily as a Macan, but if it's close than that engine would be a good match. Last edited by equ; 05-28-2020 at 12:18 PM. |

The 2017 used Macan S is a pretty decent deal. This one is pretty loaded: https://www.porscheatlantaperimeter....ab2a54hlb17707 But probably coming up on that expensive PDK service... |

I don't think that service is a dealbreaker. The macan turbo (what I had) had the most torque. The base 4-cyl is pretty much a normal CUV with niceties.
The downfall of the macan (for me) is interior space. It's no bigger than a 3-series, and smaller for luggage (length) than any 3-series wagon or even our alltrack. It's very luxo and fancy inside. It achieves 3-series level of handling, I'll give it that (and perhaps better steering feel and decent chassis feel). That's impressive for something tall and heavy. But then you don't get anything back for the heavy; I guess you get tall if you wanted that. You still have the same space. And you're achieving 340i levels of drive with bigger tires, bigger brakes and more gas, consuming more in the process. |
