I agree with JST on the E90 but have not driven the newer F/G yet. Do not miss my old E90 at all but do miss my E36.

I loved the F80. It was plenty torquey to drive around town and if you beat on it, it made itself smaller and sharper. Had timing been different by two months I might still have it even though it may not be the perfect car for my current situation. Since that ship has sailed, I will add that at least in Competition trim, it was too firm and loud to properly play the luxury car role. But it was a great looking car and I enjoyed owning it. If the car had been available in my early 30's I would have had it for at least a decade.

Dunno, maybe my memories of the E90 are rose-tinted but I remember being surprised that it would damn near back itself into corners and then refuse to understeer after that. Yeah the steering had no feedback but the balance was really good. Two different cars, too, both like that. And the engine was just a gem. Of course I never had to feed either car and wasn't worried about rod and main bearings

In fairness, I’ve never had the chance to push the F80 that hard, so maybe the E90 is better at the limit (though a number of reviews I’ve seen suggest the opposite is true). And yeah, the V8 is great when you’re whaling on the car, and doesn’t suffer from the lag that the turbo engine has. If I were buying a track car, that might sway me…but if I were buying a track car I’d buy a Porsche.

The F80s will only climb in value over time. Like the E46s and E90s are now.

The aficionados will likely look back and agree that it’s got the best balance of driver’s car (manual) and the engine which while less soulful than the S65, matches the mission of the car better.

I’m thinking I’d like a post-bearing replacement E90 M3 for myself. I like the BMW V8 sound.
