there are a lot of things about the Elise that are superior to the Solstice. the real question will be how close to Elise performance you can get as a consumer when the Solstice GXP hits the streets. they are going to have line 'em up and it will be a great comparison that could span the low-end all the way to the high-end: mx5 mazdaspeed, solstice GXP, s2000, M4 roadster, boxster S and the Elise.

In terms of numbers, lots of cars are "close to the Elise."
In real life, nothing is close to the Elise but an Elise. The S2000 engine is near the bottom of my list in terms of four-cylinders I'd like to own. The car is fun to drive, but that engine is the reason I own a Boxster instead of an S2k. 20 minutes in Ken's S2k and I have a headache from the constant thrashing of that motor. Somehow, didn't have any problems in an Elise, even after an hour plus freeway slog from Denver to Co. Springs. |

I drove the S2000 up to Valdosta (~230 miles) once. Once. Most definitely not a car you want to be driving any more than 50 miles at a time.

i think the world of the elise (okay, i'm lukewarm on the styling). it's not me being a 'mudgeon so much as giving atyboy some flak.
i wouldn't expect a lowest cost bidder 20k car to compete well with the 2nd/3rd generation Elise out of the box. if it did, that would be spectacular. but realize that the miata is going into its third generation and the Elise is also quite a mature platform. by golly, they had better have gotten it right by now. the solstice is damn good out of the box. that's the first thing. the second is that it will just get better. unlike BMW with its z3 and then z4, where the case study was right there sitting in front of them and they still missed the side of the barn (i.e. benchmarking the boxster), the solstice is for most intents and purposes pretty darn close to the miata. that the bogey.
