Because it's the quick and easy way to test if the transfer case is worn out. It's the number one PPI item for any iX.

An easy test if you have two of these vehicle dollies
Might even be a "must need" for easier vehicle storage in the garage of doom

When the VC is burned out, the rear wheels spin and the front does nothing. You still have AWD, but AWD with an open center diff is not nearly as effective.

The 340i did well in its first trip. 900 miles, Vermont & a bit of Quebec... Not deep snow, but lots of slush and icy conditions. Barely felt it with blizzaks, though a muddy road was harder. It's officially the dirtiest car in NJ, one of my neighbors asked if we did Paris-Dakar in it, it's so mud/salt covered (picture is halfway through the trip, not fully dirty). Averaged 26.5-27 on the way up and 28.5 on the return.. Not the 5er's big tank, but 300+ mi fill-ups are easy, the longest one was at 355mi.
It's a well balanced. Decent on the highway, I found myself opting for the 60mph VT roads (e.g. Rt 22) over the interstate. I can't see doing that in the 535i as much. The split-folding rear seat came in handy. Paper plates caused minor questioning at the borders... The usual, I ask a dealer to do my own DMV work, they almost never let me. |

Woof. White cars in the winter. I used to have one. Glad the 340 is proving satisfactory, if not completely exhilarating--but that's what the Boxster is for.

* good condition * 6-speed & xdrive * Interior color complements exterior * Track handling package (this is essential). I found myself in comfort mode in most frost heaved New England roads. But even comfort with this suspension is not overly floaty in daily terms. Sport is too jiggly on winter roads. Even with 18" wheels non-runflats. I feel my head bouncing off the headrest. The boxster may be vaguely similar in power, though it feels faster/quicker to respond, it's quite a different driving experience that is not outshined by the 340i, nor should it be. But I think I'm getting closer to the point of selling my 535i. Thinking about BaT, the car has imperfections, but those can all be photographed. It's not an old enough car to get decent value there, but hoping "last of the large manual RWD sedans" gets some interest. |
