Without a tune the PP GTI makes 220 HP (?) That is less horsepower than my diesel pickup truck.
Edit: I've driven Clyde's car a couple times, it's faster - or it certainly feels it. But it's not for me either. Edit II: According to the internets a 2015 Camry v6 hits 60 in 5.8 seconds.....the GTI is 5.7. That's hot alright. |

The power of the GTI in stock form is ... adequate. It doesn't have the kind of nutty speed of our (tuned) Mazdaspeed. But with a mild tune they become more than adequate.
They are awesome cars, and I'd like to own one. My wife disagrees, and it's her car, so no GTI for us. |

It's a nice car. If I had a kid that needed a car it would be at the top of the list. There's just nothing "fun" about it as far as I could tell. |

Don't you drive an SMG E46 M3? Your opinion is invalid.

My opinion should hold more weight. You see what I put up with regularly.
It's possible that DSG was partially responsible for sapping the fun factor. I can totally understand why manufacturers would just go with auto boxes instead. Everyone like to bitch about SMG, but mostly because it's so difficult to drive smoothly, ergo, its MORE involving. |

DSG definitely saps the fun of the GTI.

Just drove the GTI again. My luck that verizon was at the shop where the detune was going to take place, so they didn't have solid connectivity. So far, still on high output tune.
As a comparison I drove the 535i to the shop, in sport mode and with the nice M-perf exhaust was having some fun. Hopped in the GTI, wow so much more fun. 380ft-lbs on 3100lbs. Best non-R VW I've driven (and better than many audis too). What an awesome car. It just rips. I'm sure it's the same as some diesel truck and a dated e46 m3 (I own one too!) and what not. Pshaw. No stock 335 or e46M would keep up with this. |
