My wife and / or daughter never, ever, EVER did the exact same thing on the right rear tire of our E46 in March of this year. Nope, not at all.

Still waiting for the new wheel to arrive.

In the mean time, I’ve completed another round of tweaks:
1) Swapped the MAF (FCPEuro warranty covered part) from the in-law’s X5.
2) Swapped the front door glass from the in-law’s X5. These panes were tinted with expensive Pinnacle F1 film, so it was worth the effort when I already had to pull the door panels.
3) Swapped the front door speakers for a Morel MDT-12 tweeter and a Dayton RS150P-4 mid.
4) Swapped the front door handles, which were looking quite shitty and used up for leather covered.

I’m really, really surprised by how much of a difference swapping the speakers made. I expected the stock all to be a lot more of a hindrance than it actually was. It’ll be WAY better with a real amp and a sub installed, but it now sounds decent enough that you could live with it.

As a coda to the tire saga, it turns out that Continental includes a road hazard warranty with their tires. So, for $38 (and a new-used wheel), the tire got replaced.

I also mounted up an extra Michelin that I had around on the kind of trashed old wheel. Might as well have the extra spare.

I don't think I would have imagined you'd wind up with anything other than this with that requirement. The problem I'd expect you to have (but don't necessarily expect you to find it a problem that you'll need to fix) is that the X5 is only marginally better at the things you want it to do than what you already had.

A minivan or any number of crossovers and other SUVs solve the practical problems way, way better than the X5 while the X5 is better than what you have, it's not that much better. Time doesn't just change perspective, but needs change with time, too. It's weird. I'm sure the X5 will be interesting experiment and hope it's successful.
Happened to skim over this looking for my gearing chart...

After living with the X5 for a little while (and 5,000 miles), I think that the reality here is that this is both right and very wrong. Even though I agree that the E53 is not a very space efficient vehicle, it is *dramatically* more capacious for our needs.

The E90 can carry some cargo, baby, and one passenger. If we are super desperate, a dog can go on the front seat. We did that once. Obviously it was a very short trip.

The X5 can carry baby, two passengers (even three passengers in a pinch - the middle seat is actually wide enough to use next to the baby seat), AND both dogs. And there'd still be a (very limited) amount of room for cargo.

If the E90 wasn't so fucking awful at fitting a baby seat, it would be closer. But it's really bad.

Add a roof box to the E53, and you’re golden. We had to do that with the E70, because kid, three dogs, and crap going back and forth to the country. Same deal for driving vacations…

I was kind of leaning to a hitch carrier. I don't know where we would put a roof box.
