So Tesla is losing $4000 on every Model S it sells? Yikes.

http://www.cnbc.com/2015/08/10/tesla...-car-sold.html

Quote:
The Silicon Valley automaker is losing more than $4,000 on every Model S electric sedan it sells, using its reckoning of operating losses, and it burned $359 million in cash last quarter in a bull market for luxury vehicles. The company on Wednesday cut its production targets for this year and next. Chief Executive Elon Musk said he's considering options to raise more capital, and didn't rule out selling more stock.

Since I am not a finance person, I have no idea what this means--but it sounds like the question of what they count as "operating losses" is pretty critical. It sounds like it is oversimplifying to the point of obfuscation to say that they "lose $4000 on every Model S it sells," though again I have no idea WTF I am talking about.

All of the weekend nonsense FUD articles appear to be part of a bear attack designed to shake out weak longs at the market opening this morning.

Clickbait headline is clickbait.

It's sort of disingenuous to count all the company's development costs and amortize them across each Model S sold. Now if that trend continues through their next model introductions, then I'd think that would be a problem. But I'm not a P+L guy.

So... I got to experience Ludicrous Mode today in a brand new P90D with the LM option (which is signified by a horizontal bar under the model badge...). Just a ride around the block. Putting it into LM requires holding down the Insane Mode button in settings for a couple seconds -- and the center screen gives sort of a light speed effect for a second also.

Holy shit is it fast. But incredibly smooth.

Also learned that Tesla has released pricing for the upgrade to the 90 battery. Interestingly, it's the same price to upgrade a 60, 70 or 85 to the 90 battery -- $22k. I'm not interested in upgrading just the battery -- would just upgrade the entire car to a newer model instead.

It's interesting (and surprising) that they are offering the upgrade for 60s and 70s...and that it's the same price. Buying a 60 and doing the upgrade might not be a bad plan. It makes no sense for the 85s, of course.

Speaking of "upgrades," I'm very warily watching the progress of the new UI that it looks like will be rolling out soon.

For those here that haven't been following TMC, the 7.0 software update appears to include a radical overhaul of the intstrument cluster. In addition to looking different, it seems to contain much less information (like regen/power usage, date time, temp, etc).

If they roll it out to my car in the form we've seen in the leaks, I am going to be really, really pissed. Like "won't buy another Tesla" pissed.
