"widely available" and "common" are not the same.
If I know my wife at all, what she really meant was, "No one in my family had a car with a/c until the mid-80s." Her first car with a/c was a 2000 Alitma SE she bought in 1999. Quote:
I don't recall any of the family cars we had when I was a kid not having it, but I remember my dad ranting a few times about one of them not having it because he had bought into its marketing over its ventilation system that he thought would be good enough to not need a/c. Can't remember what car, though.
