"widely available" and "common" are not the same.

If I know my wife at all, what she really meant was, "No one in my family had a car with a/c until the mid-80s." Her first car with a/c was a 2000 Alitma SE she bought in 1999.

My ‘65 Landcruiser even had an aftermarket unit installed (put in by the original owner when the truck was new)

Thinking back to the cars my parents drove in the 70s, the only one built that decade that didn’t have AC was the VW Squareback my dad drove. But he also has an early 70s Blazer that did have AC.

My 1969 Corvette did not. The 1970 Cutlass and 1976 Delta 88 did. The 1975 280Z did not. The Mustang GTs all had it. My 92 Civic Si came without it, but I'm pretty sure I bought it as a dealer-installed option (or added it within a month or two of purchase).

I don't recall any of the family cars we had when I was a kid not having it, but I remember my dad ranting a few times about one of them not having it because he had bought into its marketing over its ventilation system that he thought would be good enough to not need a/c. Can't remember what car, though.
