I wasn't on the drive but my wife rode along. From what I heard, it was quite the POS. You have to feel bad for a car that clearly was not shown any love.

Yeah, that S2K was beat. You could feel the suspension moving drunkenly, and it had essentially a garbage bag taped over the top to keep the rain out of the rips.

Still, that's a car with nice steering and a spectacular shifter. Even giving allowances for the less than stellar condition of this example, though, the drive reaffirmed my feeling that the S2K and I just don't line up--the whole waiting for the VTEC to kick in, yo, thing is just not entertaining.

My 996 had that "CD storage", 4 or 6 of them, taking space in the console for whatever reason..

Good to have a comparison point for future test drives. There will be other, better cars...

Really odd in a car with a trunk-mounted changer but no in-dash CD.

The one we drove last weekend, while cosmetically awful and with nearly 70k miles and an even worse color combo, felt nimbler and more fun to drive. It was another '01 986S. It's odd.

I'm really trying to decide what it is that I want to do, if anything.

Piece of shit.

We joked about it while JST was taking his turn driving.

My 987S has a single CD in dash, a 6-CD changer in the front trunk, but inside the glvoe box there are storage slots for 3 CD's.

Are you SURE it didn't have the in-dash CD? I am pretty sure all Boxsters had the in-dash CD player. You needed to press the little button with the curvy arrow on it to make the face flip down.

Did you write down the option codes (on the label on the backside of the front trunk)? You could have done that and then gone online to one of the option decoders to find out what the car originally came with.

For what it's worth, I ended up selling my 2000 986S for $17,500 about a year ago. That car was as nice as you'd be able to find and had fairly low miles. NOBODY is paying that price now for the early cars. They are much cheaper.
