Buying out of state

Anything anyone suggests I need to consider if purchasing a car in NY for registration in NJ?

Register it first, bring the plates to the car when you pick it up.

Hmmm.... what if I don't know that I'm definitely buying it, and don't want to make two trips?

Have them lend you dealer plates. You can mail them back when you get yours. That is what I did with the Volvo and that was in-state.

I just assumed there would be a temp plate like I've had in CA and NJ previously... a card taped to the windshield and/or back window.

I was thinking in terms of tax and title implications, mostly.

tell them you live in NJ and they'll probably not charge you sales tax and then you can go register the car and pay the sales tax in NJ after you buy

They'll know what to do, they'll give you a temp plate and you pay taxes when you register the car.

Here in CT, once you buy and pay in full, all info goes to the state, the state then issues the title - it takes a few days, the title arrives in the mail.
