Sometimes, but depends on the failure. I had an alternator freeze/lock-up on me once -- no warning. I had driven the car to the mall, parked it. when I came back, I tried to start the car, and all I could hear was the alternator belt screeching since the alternator wouldn't turn (with a bit of smoke billowing out)

I was in high school and it was my mom's car. AAA towed the car to the dealership, and I had to wait around until someone could pick me up.

Thinking back on it -- how did I manage do all that without a cell phone

Do you have a volt meter? Check and see if the charging voltage is around 14.
