I doubt warm up is an issue. I had a POS 1985 190D 2.2 with 200k miles and in the worst of Worcester winters it took only 15-20 seconds.

I admit to being rather confused.

It definitely sounds like there is some buyers (seller's?) remorse going on here.

Assume they are not used to them with a MCS and soon if not already the LR4

Too short a ride to make it compelling.

But I've been looking at 100k mile cars with diesel powertrains and when you speak with mechanics, they really gush about robustness compared with gasoline equivalents.

more that it is extra for the powertrain new and used there is a resale premium for diesels. He said he wanted something cheap.

I don't think they "need" diesel, especially expecting 5-6k miles/yr. Warm-up is a non-issue and the mechanicals of their drivetrains might be strong, but they still have a lot of complexity. Especially german diesels doctored for crappy fuel combined with tighter-than-EU emissions requirements on passenger diesels could have fuel filter (VW) and/or diesel particulate filter (BMW) issues in the long run. The fact is we haven't seen the long run yet on the newest turbodiesels. Based on my 2,000 mile "test drive", they are quite enjoyable, but if I had to buy again, I'd still look for CPO.

I get that the MCS is a bit lacking in utility for a mother of two, but I'm not sure how that can be satisfactorily replaced for $15k or under.

If you do put it on the market, equ's gf might be interested... Then again, gf's heavy highway mile usage, 18k miles/yr, requires something quite reliable.

At 100,000 miles a well maintained gas engine is just getting broken in. If anything, the diesel will have cost you more to get there - initial purchase price and higher maintenance costs.

If you maintain the engines the same the diesel will last longer, but none of us are likely to keep the car the 300,000 miles that it'll take to make a difference.
