Added question —when you exhaust the EV only range, the battery still has 20% charge. Does it have any battery power to do battery assist for passing maneuvers? Or is it completely ICE only?

No, part of the reason that there’s a big buffer in the battery is that the EV assist features remain even when you’re ostensibly at “0 miles” remaining electric range. So it will give you the e-boost for acceleration and will even switch over to EV only at very low speeds even when the battery is seemingly exhausted.

So I searched awhile. And finally found a CPO X5 45e to drive. It was okay.

Drove a 2019 (2020?) Cayenne Hybrid. Same. It was okay.

Feels like the 2 hour ride through LA and beyond negates the hybrid advantage. True? False? Do I not understand how a hybrid SUV works?

I mean, as I understand it, the 45e basically only has enough electric power to offset the extra weight of the system. Kind of a lame "hybrid."

I don’t think that’s quite right about the 45e; it has at least a little bit of stand-alone electric range. Maybe 20 miles?

But no doubt the 50e is substantially more capable, both in terms of electric range and additional power.

I don’t know what your commute looks like, and what “2 hours” means. How many miles?

If you’re in stop and go traffic, the hybrid is pretty nice and will bump your efficiency up a fair amount (especially if you plug in, but even if you don’t). If you doing a lot of higher speed freeway driving and your commute is 50 plus miles one way, the ICE is going to be running a lot and your benefits are going to be a lot smaller.

It’s a 50/50. Morning is early so it’s all out spring to get there before rush hour starts; the drive is less than 2 hours. But average speed can be rapid. The evenings is rush hour —2 hours for 150 miles can be up to four hours if I get it wrong.

I have an X3 sdrive 30 as a loaner today. I had sort of been musing about what my next car would be and whether I could step down to the four cylinder and back to an SUV type thing again.

Ugh. Nice looking, but not remotely fun to drive. And, whoa that engine feels rough after the B58 in my car. Pep around town is fine, but delivery feels much less refined.

I drove the X3 M40 a number of times when I was looking for my last SUV and I am now reminded by how uninspiring I found it.

I could still maybe see an X5 of some stripe. At least that cabin is a nice place to be.

Looking at a CPO 2020 hybrid cayenne again.

I’ll pass along information after I check it out.

OT, but it's funny that more than once now my wife has mentioned a Cayenne as future LR4 replacement down the road. She hasn't driven one or anything. I just think she thinks they are cool and look good.

The impractical side of me wants G wagen.

But I know dynamically they’re crap. But they sure look cool.

CPO Cayenne hybrid is probably going to be my slow dipping of the toe in the water to get me ready for an EV world.

The thing with Porsche or Audi is you have enough vehicles out there now in the world to know which engines are the ones to get, which ones are the ones to avoid. What years are bad years. There’s a track record and tons of data so anyone can make an informed decision.
