Lots of variables, so it's hard to give a single answer. But for a new, warrantied car, the FiST is certainly what I'd look at first.

For a slightly used car, a GTI is what I'd get--though whether I'd buy a used GTI over a new FiST would depend entirely on whether I needed more back seat space.

Fil is coming from a long string of BMWs. I see a GTI as being a much easier transition than the FiST or FoST.

Yes, you are right. He would have much better luck with a used Chevrolet.
