How badly do you need the AWD and extra power of the R? The 220hp GTI also is 200lbs lighter with a spare tire. The diff gives me some comfort for snow and putting power down. A GTI can be had in the mid-to-high 20's, the R is nearly 40. I can't get over the price difference.

Lucky kid, curious to hear your thoughts when you get it.
And I totally get JST's frustration. It is completely ridiculous that VW dealership won't let you test drive an R. Especially for a possible customer pulling up with his wife in either a tesla, previous gen R or a boxster... come on that sounds like a car salesman's wetdream.

If I didn't already have the AWD Golf, I'd probably be totally happy with the GTI. But...

Good thoughts, but the weekdays are even harder than the weekends for reasons I won't bore you with.
At the end of the day, there's only so much effort I'm willing to expend on buying a VW. VWs dealers have made clear they don't need my business. Fortunately I don't need to buy their car, so we are on the same page. Win/win. |

JST:
Honestly, from the point of view of subaru's and 40/60 rear-biased awd systems, the haldex Golf R system is likely weak sauce. It certainly will be after my s4 torsen+sports rear diff which kicked out like a RWD car. Give the GTI SE spec a try, you might be surprised. I hadn't seen the chart below until after my drive. FXD is the front diff on 2017 GTI's sport package and above. It's also on 2015 or 2016's as the performance package, but hard to find. |

Just take AF's lead and get a 340 x-drive. I bet if you go to a BMW dealership, they'll throw you and your wife the keys and say "see you in an hour"

Speaking of the GTI, is it normal that 2017s are getting discounted by $7k at my local dealership?
