I guess I misunderstood because it seems they did not embark on their trip at that time and either just now leaving or soon will be.

They created an Instagram account to share their trip progress if anyone is interested:

It looks like they're breaking the trip into two legs of about 620 and 2000 miles and plan to stop every 120ish miles.

I'm not sure which battery this one has, but Rivian says towing 11,000 pounds (max rating) reduces range by about 50% and that the charging network they're building will be capable of adding 140 miles in 20 minutes.

This suggests an EV truck in long distance towing duty is doable, but, um, kinda in the same sense my 1976 Olds Delta 88 was a six passenger car. Just because it can be done doesn't mean it's a very good choice.

But definitely progress. I look forward to seeing this trip unfold.

Stopping every 120 miles on a cross-country trip sounds absolutely horrible.

Glancing at the instagram, I think 120 miles is the outside edge of bladder distance. Old guys just can't go that far.

+1000

I have been taking a lot of 180-220 mile road trips in the past few years and there is no way I would want to stop at 120 miles to wait for my car to charge, I don't even want to stop for 5 minute bathroom breaks ...

It's an R1T Launch Edition, so I guess it has the 314 mile rated battery.

Not just stopping every 120 miles, but probably 40 minutes or more from off ramp to on ramp each time.

I would enjoy doing it if the object was to tow a car cross country in an EV truck just to do it.

I would be frustrated if the object was to get a car from here to there without driving the car.

Currently there is only one battery option offered, the “large.”

He's a Rivian employee. Before I saw him (or his wife?) comment that it's a Launch Edition, I wasn't sure if it was a company vehicle that may have been configured differently than a regular production truck off the line. Hence, my uncertainty about the battery.

They'd probably do 15-20 miles better per charge if their trailer didn't have an air brake built on the tongue.
