Well, I was driving a gutted VW Cabrio with an aftermarket suspension and sticky tires, but at best it was stock NC Miata-fast.

The #Obamaexpress Volvo 850, owned by a Volvo part fabricator drove pretty well.

Clay does love him some flip flops.

It's a really good demonstration of how well a mildly modified BMW will do high speed transitions. I think that the top of the uphill esses is where the speed delta between the Senna and the BMW was closest around the parts of the track that they ran. SpecE46 allows for coilovers, sways, a diff, and weight reduction. There's a spec tune, but it comes with a low rev limit and is more oriented around turning off error codes, because the M54B30 blows up if you rev it above 6500ish in track use. The rest of what's allowed is durability and safety oriented. They aren't even allowed monoball RTABs.

Don’t you miss out on a lot of the s54 power output if you stop the engine at 6500rpms?

M54 - the 330i engine. SpecE46 uses a non-M chassis.

The S54 will rev pretty well. There are enough folks running daily to 9k that I plan to do that when I put mine in the E30 M3. I’d probably not run that above 3rd gear, mind you.

Oh.

I thought s54 obviously. And in the later years BMW did running updates to this engine so it lessens the earlier issues with remain rod bearing wear? Was that just oil starvation? Or was it the bearing material?

All the famous failures were caused by defective bearings that were too tight. BMW runs their clearances extremely tight according to most engine builders, so a slightly too tight bearing results in engine failure as there is no margin of safety whatsoever.

I’ve installed slightly wider clearance bearings in mine, which seems to help.

Was minimal clearance the same issue that plagued some of the E92 M3’s?

And was the minimal clearance something that was the issue with the BMW v10?

I know most engine failures are anecdotal and 911s have plenty of stories too.

It can tolerate more than that once you add an oil pump chain tensioner and a decent crank damper, but I'm guessing that's not legal in the Spec class. And it doesn't make power up there anyway.
