You've always had interests in old defenders. That would scratch the different, need wrenching, cool factor and 4ppl transporter reqds

Yeah, the problem is that both old Defenders and old G wagens (which would be my preference) are like 911s, price-wise; there aren’t really any cheap ones left.

I could be wrong but I do think it would bring you more joy than another car that sits outside that you can't work on.

A few other random observations from my own life. YMMV
  • Any time I've been bored and tried to fix it by buying a toy... It failed. Finding a new hobby or activity worked better.
  • I'm with John: working on a car with a time deadline sucks. Cars that you can let sit and finish when you are bored and have time is fun
  • I'm with Clyde. Sports cars on the street aren't that rewarding.
  • Going a totally different direction sometimes works. I can't explain why, but driving around in a stupid pickup truck is oddly satisfying to me. Driving over snow banks and curbs, etc. Think outside the box.
This. Especially the bold face statements.

Makes a lot of sense. I’ve driven my father in laws pickup on a number of occasions and found it fun for similar reasons.

Oh yeah, it's fun wheeling out on dirt roads, and bashing through thick piles of snow....

....until you get stuck.

But how would cost of ownership Calc out? I assume depreciation would be negligible so it would just be the cash tied up while you had it. Might even make some money if you didn't put too many miles on it.

That generation Thunderbird I've always found striking, but until I get my MCM portico to park it under, I think it's older than I want to go.

The 94 E36 is already at 16,5. I think it's RNM at anything under 20.

This '68 Corvette isn't my cup of meat, but if Clyde were feeling bored...

I think it would be entertaining to do it up with a 3.5L Ecoboost crate motor.
