Random observations from trip to Montreal V4.0

-Did I mention GPS's are cool?

-V70R averaged 21.0mpg on 300 hwy miles at 75mph. That Thule box hurts mpg, but is great to have.

-Wow, people have S L O W E D down. At 75mph I was blowing past people the way I normally do at 80+. I was honestly shocked by this.

-Filled up in Swanton, VT (last station before Canadian border) at $4.20 for 93. At just under $70, that's easily the most expensive fillup ever for me. Average price for one liter of regular in suburban Montreal: $1.36 CAD (That's ~$5.15 a gallon).

-Saw an A-Class, and a few Smarts - including one on the hwy doing ~70mph. Didn't seem like it would be a fun thing to do regularly. Saw a Red RS4 as I left for home. I like the front bumper from my rear view mirror, but otherwise it looked remarkably like a regular A4. It would have been more so in black or gray I'm sure.

-I've been going there for almost 8 years now and Montreal's drivers' disregard for complete stops still freaks me out.

i've tested just having load bars atop a car for highway mileage and those along cost ~2mpgs.

Well, I sued to get ~27mpg with nothing on top, not even railings. Still, not too bad considering the hilly terrain and likely, a 4800-5000lb car.

When we went to Newport, RI, we took the 330i (no dog) and I got ~29mpg. Nice to have a 2nd car with some utility that is still fun.

Fixed it...

My 03 zhp never broke 26-27. My 04 zhp (bought new) sometimes got 28-29. The e90xi easily gets 29-30 on the highway. 28 with some traffic thrown in.

With my Thule fairing, rack + ski/snowboard attachment, I was barely getting 22 mpg highway and just depressing mpg city in my 318... it took all the power of my car to make it up mountains and it was always a fight merging up to speed in traffic. Now that it's off for summer, it's back to 28-30mpg highway.

Which box attachment do you have FC? I was considering one for summer trips too.

Don't ever visit Florida then. They might as well take our stop signs down, because nobody pays an ounce of attention to them.

WOW. I would figure a 318 would be more economical than that. My E36 M3 got 28-30 on the highway!

We've got a Yakima box, the bars graciously donated by lemming a few years ago. Bars only (no fairing) on the highway, there's no noticable impact on MPG (can't say the same about wind noise, though). With the box (again, no fairing), it's about 2.5 MPG

Load bars with my bike on top usually cost about 1 mpg. Add a second bike and it was closer to 2 mpg. Bars alone shouldn't cost that much. What car, Lemming?

I bought a Thule Atlantis 1800. It's a pretty good product. I like it.
