All the famous failures were caused by defective bearings that were too tight. BMW runs their clearances extremely tight according to most engine builders, so a slightly too tight bearing results in engine failure as there is no margin of safety whatsoever.

I’ve installed slightly wider clearance bearings in mine, which seems to help.
