Forget that. I don't have the time or inclination to hand wash my own cars any more. I take my car to a well-run car wash (fairly infrequently, I must admit) and it still looks fine. An occasional professional detail to mitigate whatever minimal swirling might occur and just enjoy the car.
Life's too short to worry about micro scratches in a machine's clear coat. Especially in the northeast.
