I am struggling with not giving up on a manual as well for my next car. I've really tried to like flappy paddles in SMG/DCT/Auto configurations but just don't. It saps so much joy from driving and I find I always just default to the auto settings. I miss skipping gears (ie 2->4 or 5->3), holding neutral for a bit when coasting down and any other non-instant sequential transmission change that I choose to make.
The pool for replacing the 1er is really narrow and with other driving pleasure considerations comes down to a 911 vert/981gts or AMV8C. Then layer on top of that any kind of fiscal responsibility and my 1er needs to last me a long time.
I think the move away from hydraulic steering, manual transmissions and 6cyl+ engines is what is really ballooning the used car market for vehicles that have those features.
