The reason I don't like the ones that have plastic surrounding them (i.e. insulated butt splices) is they're too fat and as a result make the harness bulky. These are hardly bigger than the insulated wire, even after shrink wrapping them.

This is what I generally use. Slightly bulkier than straight heat shrink, but not that much when shrunken down. And I can’t forget to put the heat shrink on first.
The uninsulated splices make sense for bit harness jobs, but the heat shrink splices are more convenient.
