Yeah, but that was a throttle, gearing, power curve issue. Ever drive an E53 X5 3.0? It feels really grunty in normal use. The E70 was probably anemic because they needed to make room for the turbo engine in the middle.
Also, much as I shit on modern turbo engines with manual gearboxes, they have a lot more grunt down low. And the drivability issues largely disappear.
Edit: For example, a gasser F-350 in the mid-90s had 150hp (!) and 260ft-lbs. of torque. A 2.0T compares pretty favorably with that.
