When I had a wagon we rarely used the additional height provided by it. Seemed like hatchback would provide most of the utility I needed, aka loading a bike and long items.
It is a personal use case topic I guess. We use the height space of the e46 wagon or X5 all the time for the dog (I don't like the dog free roaming in the car with the seats down or sitting in the back seat), for 2 to 3 hockey bags when we were taking our daughter and friends to ice hockey practice, for moving the kids back and forth to college, Taking bulky items to the lake, etc. A few of these things would work with the hatchback, but many wouldn't. I guess my take is what is the benefit of the hatch that the wagon doesn't do better.
