Monterey, CA, has the Concourse de Elegance thingy in August at Pebble, and that is usually preceded by a huge auction in the Monterey Plaza. I've never been to one there, but Speed Channel has broadcast a few of them in the past.
Sorry, not sure if they let you get close to the cars to drool or photog them, but if you're looking for an excuse to go to one of the most beautiful locales in the world this would be it.
