Enlightened self interest . . . the other guys were in our way, winching them up the hill got them out of our way.

As for towing the other rig down. . . well, you don't leave anyone behind in your group. "Most of the time" the guys out on the trail are pretty friendly and helpful and will pitch in, even helping out complete strangers. Though we did encounter a group of 4 that were impatient and grouchy. But that is rare.
