For automotive enthusiast Marylanders, I'd expect you to be able to tell that the tag is fake because the colors and fonts are wrong and the design is off, too and leave it at that.
THX-1138 was the name of George Lucas's first feature film (which was a remake of one of his student films with a similar name). One of the producers was France Ford Coppola and it starred Robert Duvall.
It one of the crucial films that all scifi geeks have to know all about before they're given their official Trekkie badges.
For regular people...
The "THX" you probably know from seeing it (and hearing the rising tone) right before movies start (in theaters and on DVD and BD) as that's a Lucas thing, too.
"THX" and/or "1138" show up in just about all of Lucas's movies in one place or another. They've also shown up in many other movies as way for other directors to make fun of or show respect to Lucas as well.
