A beam-type is required because the specs call for a torque range, something a clicker-type can't give you. The check when rebuilding a rear-end calls for swinging the tool repeatedly back and forth while following the torque reading with your head to make sure it falls within spec. It looks very amusing to onlookers but it's actually pretty simple.
