OK, I went and looked at the Meteor Grey one, because why not?

Mechanically it was in pretty nice shape, seemed relatively well preserved (and had recent N spec Michelin Pilots, which is a good shibboleth for someone being willing to spend money on maintenance).

Cosmetically, though, it was pretty beat up. Lots of scratches on the door and and frunklid, including a couple of very deep ones. Plus from the fading of some of the plastic trim it's clear that it had spent a lot of time outside and uncovered.

Easy pass, frankly.

But TIL that the 987 didn't come standard with automatic climate control. Who knew?

A couple of further 987.1 v. 987.2 impressions:
  • The 9A1 engine has more power than the M96 3.2, it's obvious. But this car displayed something I've noticed in other 987.2s, which is that the throttle just isn't as linear as it is on the M96. I don't know if this is due to an e-throttle implementation or what, but you can catch the 9A1 a little flat-footed in a way that you can't with the M96.
  • The 987.2 sport steering wheel is thicker (and feels larger diameter?), plus has a dumb flat bottom. It's not better.
  • The minor controls, on the other hand, are better, and don't have the gross soft-touch surface that gets sticky and falls off the 987.1s.
  • The exterior mirrors are bigger, which is nice, and something that I always forget about.
  • I don't know why they changed the window switches, but they did. Same with the top switch. The 987.1s are better but maybe I'm just used to them.
  • The 987.2 suffers from the same dumb top elastic problem that the .1 does. I saw a tip to fix this with Bed Bands and that actually works pretty well.

Still on the hunt for a good .2, but it's increasingly clear to me that the 10 year old cars that end up at Carmax are probably not the ones you want, even if they are low mileage.
