I'm sure my wife would love to swap the Miata for a Golf. As much as a GTI would be fun, I found the vanilla TSI to be quite enjoyable. We really liked our eGolf too. A non-GTI is bound to be cheaper to buy and run as well, and would make a great car for our buys in a few years. I already have an M3 so no need for performance there.
