Wow that sucks.

But if it turns out you did ruin it, I wouldn't get too upset. What I learned after living with my e46 windshield for 12 years, then replacing it

a) windshields are cheaper than I thought and not a big deal to replace

b) the old windshield was in far worse shape than I had realized. The new windshield was so much better I was in shock,. It was like blinders were lifted.

I think of windshields as wear items now. A rock cracks your windshield? Great, I get a nice new clean one.
