Not in the news. My VIN is covered by several very nasty engine issues with no fix in sight yet. (There are TSBs out with only stopgap measures. And folks who are already waiting 3 months for new engines.)

There are many engines in this VIN sweep that may eventually need to be swapped out if they don’t find a less invasive way to fix the issues. The Mazda warranty is pretty short—although these problems may be covered by the somewhat longer power train warranty.

So, I decided I just don’t want that exposure when I’d really like to go down to one fun/practical car anyway and resale values are high. My Mazda was so low mileage, it may have never manifested the issues while under warranty. Still, I bought it to be the relatively bulletproof low-maintenance car I could hold onto long term and perhaps give to my son for college and so forth. That scenario no longer looked so rosy.

If I were super fiscally responsible, I’d go ahead and find the starter car for my son and sell the 2 as well while its value is high.

But, that would dampen my spirits too much.

Who would have thought the 2 would be the easiest car to live with longer term? (Knock wood.) Although, as we know, it’s really year 7 when the BMW maintenance fun begins. I am at 5 with only 17k miles right now. Tick, tick.

Edit: On the ride to school this am in the 2, my kid said, “Mom, you should just keep this car. You love it and I love it, and we both love the convertible aspect of it.” Yep, we do. And someone is very excited there is no alternative now to his driving it. (Ack.)
