I was curious, so I pulled up the Chevy 2019 towing guide. Here’s the link:

For the Colorado, the towing capacity ranges between 3500 and 7700 lb, depending on body style and powertrain options. Most likely it’s either 5000 or 7000 lb capacity assuming it’s a V6 (ZR2 has the lower capacity)
For tongue weight, it has this: “NOTES ON COLORADO Trailer tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of total loaded trailer weight (up to 770 lbs.). Addition of trailer tongue weight must not cause vehicle weights to exceed Rear Gross Axle Weight Rating (RGAWR) or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).”
I’m going to guess that driving at relatively high speed on dirt roads with a tongue weight close or over weigh introduced additional g forces that took the effective weight way over spec..
